Imagine living with a rare syndrome which made you look completely different from everyone around you. Imagine being told that you would never gain weight (some of us pray for this), which resulted in you weighing no more than 64 lbs? Imagine being in high school and finding a youtube video of yourself labeled, “The World’s Ugliest Woman”, with an estimated 4 million views? Imagine millions of strangers advising you to “put a gun to your head and kill yourself”, all because you were… different?
Meet Lizzie Velasquez, the girl who took her pain, and turned it into a Campaign.
At birth, Lizzie’s parents were told that their child may never talk, walk, crawl, or even think on her own. The Velasquez family did not fear nor pity their daughters condition, instead they chose to treat Lizzie as a normal child and empowering her to live her life to the fullest despite her condition.
In 2013, Lizzie started an Anti-bullying Campaign and a Kickstarter Campaign: A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story. The documentary follows Lizzie in her every day life, leading up to the moment of this TED Talk.
In Lizzie’s amazing, and inspiring TED talk, she embodies confidence as she shares her powerful story, the benefits of her condition, and why she will never let anyone’s thoughts or words define her. (Press play above)
